Fabric

Fabrics are made up of yarns

Types of Fibre :

According to their origin fibres can be classified into the following two types.

  • Natural fibres:
  • Synthetic fibre:
Natural fibres:

Natural fibre
Fibres which are obtained from plants and animals are known as natural fibres. Example Cotton , jute , silk and wool etc.
Synthetic fibre:

Synthetic fibre
Fibres which are artificially synthesized by humans within the industry from simple chemicals are known as synthetic fibres.
Example Rayon, polyester, nylon, rayon, acrylic etc.

Some plant fibre:
Cotton :

Cotton plant
  • Cotton is usually grown in black soils and warm climates.
  • The fruit of cotton is known as cotton ball.
  • Cotton is obtained from cotton bolls.
Processing of cotton:
Processing of cotton involves the following steps.
(1) Ginning :

Ginning
  • The process of removing  seeds from cotton balls is known as ginning.
  • Ginning was traditionally  done by  hands but now a days machines are also used for ginning

(2) Spinning :

Spinning wheel( charkha)

  • The process of making yarn from thin  fibres is called spinning.
  • It can be done by hand with a simple device hand spindle (takli) or hand operated device spinning wheel( charkha). on a  large scale it is done with the help of spinning machines.

(3) Weaving :

Hand loom
  • To make a fabric two sets of yarn have been  arranged together is known as weaving.
  • Weaving of fabric is done on a weaving machine known as looms. it can be either hand operated looms  or power operated.

  • It can be done by hand or it is also done on machines.
 Jute :
  • Jute fibre is obtained from the stem of jute plants. It is soft, shiny and long fibre with a silky texture.
  • Jute is  Cultivated in rainy seasons and is mainly grown in  West Bengal, Bihar and Assam.
